Nick hustled. A new To-Do list had taken shape in his mind and he wanted to put everything in order, making it perfect for Kiley—at least, as much as he could. He also wanted to get it done fast, so he could hurry to the hospital. I don’t want her out of my sight very long.

His inner voice nagged, quietly insisting that he might not give this attention to a different student, that maybe his interest wasn’t purely out of concern. He ignored it and checked off items.

First, he had to assure the campus police that he’d handle all notifications and that he’d come to their office by the end of the day tomorrow to fill out a complete incident report. Then came the call to Kiley’s parents. He found Kiley’s phone in a pocket on the outside of her purse—just as well that he didn’t have to dig through her things—and suddenly realized he’d forgotten to ask for her passcode.

To his surprise, he didn’t need one. He swiped the screen and her phone lit up immediately. He scanned her contacts and located the contact labeled ‘Home.’ Who besides Kiley would be so trusting? Or is this all about her small-town roots? He mumbled a silent prayer of thanks, but his gut churned as he heard the siren in the distance. He started the call; when a woman’s voice answered after only two rings, he sighed with relief.

“Mrs. Ross? I’m Nick Santino, the instructor in Kiley’s newswriting lab.” He delivered the message calmly, playing down risk, assuring her mother that Kiley had not apparently been involved in the traffic accident, but had sustained a separate small injury. “The paramedics are transporting her, just to check her out to be sure she’s safe.” He gave the name of the hospital and told her Kiley had asked him to call. “She was conscious and talkative when the paramedics took her out,” he said, wondering how long it would take him to get to Kiley’s side.

Kiley’s mother assured him she and her husband would leave immediately. Since they were on the same side of the city as both the hospital and the university, and he still had other things to do, he assumed her parents would arrive before he did.

With Kiley’s folks on the way, Nick hurried through the rest of his list. He called Claire and left a message, asking her to tell Kiley’s other friends “and Ben, too!” He alerted his department office that he had an emergency and would be gone the rest of the day. Then he made sure he had his class materials in order and had properly logged out of the smart room’s computer system before he left. That took an hour and then another twenty minutes to reach the hospital. By the time he arrived at the ER, his anxious mind had conjured up all sorts of horrific scenarios. The officious woman at the entry desk gave him a disapproving scowl and informed him the emergency area permitted family only.
